  •   Music - A Shimmer of the Eternal

    Homo nobilis, stellaris
In purely physical terms, music is energy in harmonic vibration. And so is the universe; if it were not, it would fall apart. And so are we; we too are energy in harmonic vibration; if we aren't, we get sick, even die. And - since energy cannot be created or destroyed - energy is eternal. It even transcends the comings and goings of universes. Music is, indeed, a shimmer of the eternal in time.

And as all of us know by now - our universe was born out of pure energy in its Big Bang Birth. Some of this energy then condensed into matter. And what you find at the core of every bit of matter is a bit of energy in eternal harmonic vibration. We are built out of this matter, and we are animated - body and mind - by the eternal energy of our universe.

No wonder then that we make music, that we love music, that we respond to music, and that we find joy in music. The beauty of all this is - since music is a property of energy, and since everything in this universe has its ultimate origin in energy - that there is music where ever you may go in this universe.

Since music is essentially the auditory expression of what we are at the core of our being, all of the music we create is the faithful expression of the mind and perceptions of its creators. What comes to mind immediately are the towering works of Bach and Beethoven, for example - but also, if only as of late, the kind of stuff that sounds like someone is scraping the same spot, over and over and over again, on the rusty bottom of a garbage can.

As the universe, and Life itself, have evolved from the ultimate simplicity of pure energy to their present astronomical complexity, so has music. Like the universe, Life, and all of the arts, music too has evolved from very simple beginnings to the intricate melodic complexities of Mozart, Bach and Beethoven for instance.

Alas, and behold, only in the arts, and nowhere else, has there been a devolution, culminating, at present, in the stultifying monotony of the endlessly repetitive scraping of the bottoms of rusty garbage cans, and the empty canvases of the visual arts.

Music has as yet to achieve this ultimate logical pinnacle of the "minimalists", and the bottom rung of total devolution - a 'work' consisting of, let's say, of an hour or two of silence. And this, of course, is definitely not music. This is all the clue we need to distinguish between art and self-propelled artifice, between fame and notoriety, between art and trash, between noise - and a shimmer of the eternal.
