4) A Vibrantly Healthy Biosphere
|
It's the same story as that of our climates, but on the planetary scale. However, since terrestrial forests - and not the oceans - generate fully 75% of the the free oxygen in our atmosphere, the massive eradication of the Earth's forests is decreasing the oxygen content of our atmosphere, and is rapidly driving the Earth towards the climatic extremes of a barren desert world - and towards the collapse of our biosphere to an all but anoxic, lifeless desert planet.

However, we can still reverse these dynamics now well underway, and within a few years - a decade at most - we can build up the oxygen content of our atmosphere, patch up the ozone holes, end the greenhouse effect, and return our biosphere to vibrant and abundant health. This can be done very simply, very quickly, and very cheaply - just by re-establishing the green cover of the continents. Fortunately, and since planting new forests is far too slow for the time remaining to us, there exist explosively rampant plant materials which can re-green the continents in a few years. 5) The Universal Law of Progressive Complexity

Rather than being, perhaps, the 'driest' and least interesting feature of this web site, it is actually the most interesting - even spellbinding - subject by far. The law of Progressive Complexity not only delivers much power into our hands - but it also shows, rigorously, scientifically and indisputably that our lives have vast meaning and supreme purpose; a meaning and purpose so vast and so immense (take a deep breath here and brace yourself) that it transcends the comings and goings of universes. This is true (see IMPLICATIONS in these pages). |
The law of Progressive Complexity drives all physical, chemical, biological, psychological and cognitive growth and evolution from simple beginnings to progressively higher levels of complexity - from one end of the universe to the other, and indeed - the evolution of our universe itself.
Vast and powerful beyond all imagination, this law has driven the evolution of the universe from its origin in simple energy to the astronomical complexity of its present state; it has fashioned the vast complexity of stars, planets and galaxies without number out of elementary dust; it has driven the evolution of simple matter to ever higher levels of complexity - until it became capable of embodying the progressive complexity of Life, instinct, awareness, sentience, and eventually, cognitive consciousness - and presto --- our kind and selves. Along the way, it has endowed planets without number with an infinite variety of teeming and progressively more complex biospheres - our's among them. And much power is given into our hands with the understanding of what may well be called "the law of all Creation". See PROGRESSIVE COMPLEXITY in these pages.
This law has also created, and is the driving force of our biosphere and underlies all the preceding subjects. In this light, it now turns out that we have reduced the immense physical, chemical and biological complexity of our biosphere, of our environments, of our agriculture and its products - our daily food. And via this our daily food, we have also reduced the immense physical, chemical, biological and neural complexity of our selves, of our metabolism, immune and neural functions. No wonder we have become sickly, are beset by ever more new and macabre diseases, and are beginning to go nuts.
However, we can 'engage' and use this vast and immensely powerful universal law to re-establish and foster the progressive complexity of our biosphere, of our environments, of our agriculture and of our daily food - and thus, of our selves, our metabolisms, immune and neural functions - as described in all of the preceding subjects. And this is as easy as pie. All we really need to do is to work with it, and not against it, and give it a bit of a boost - such as planting trees - where we have done severe damage.
Finally, this law also shows that Life is universal, and a fundamental property of this universe. This changes the whole picture - of the universe, of our selves and our place within it. The law of progressive complexity - as iron-clad as its inseparable 'mirror twin', the law of decay - endows the universe with meaning and purpose as vast as itself. Since this universe - and everything it contains, including our selves - is the product of its evolution, and is governed by the underlying laws of Change & Stability, and of Progressive Complexity, everything makes perfect sense in these terms. Absolutely everything. |
Whether it's our biosphere, our environments, our civilisations, our cultures and societies, our knowledge, our technologies and economies, our psychology, our politics, and yeah, even our religions - everything makes perfect sense in terms of the driving forces of this universe - its governing law of Change & Stability, and its law of Progressive Complexity -- the driving force of all evolution.
